Before and after the Wall - Photographs of
Berlin during the last 40 years
An exhibition suggested by Contrasto
Roma, Museo di Roma, Trastevere
October 24 - February 14, 2010
Palazzo di Sopra, Spilimbergo
4 luglio – 31 agosto 2009
This collection of forty great and symbolic photographs aims at reminding an important and critical moment of our history. The photographs of this exhibition tell the story of the city of Berlin devastated by the war, the erection of the wall - a hateful wound that divides the city into to parts –, the pain for this terrible mutilation, its fall and the explosion of joy and feast during this event and at the end the everyday life in the city in these days in which the wall, or its remains, became the involuntary monument of a past which can not be forgotten.
This visual and historic path is witnessed by great authors of reportage and photojournalism of our period.
Thorough photographs of authors such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Leonard Freed, Bruno Barbey, Ian Berry, Guy Le Querrec of Magnum Photos, but also through those of the great Italian reporters, from Gianni Berengo Gardin to Mauro Galligani, through the views of Giovanni Chiaramente and the eyes of young authors such as Nicola Gnesi and Davide Monteleone, it is possible to make a trip backwards in time. A trip in which the attestation and the visionariety penetrate each other in the definition of a drama, that of the Second World War and of the Iron Curtain which has broken the cultural and social unity of a population and a common history.
These wonderful photographs represent the image of our present because they tell the story of this city, which is the symbol of contemporary
Europe with its painful rupture, and that of the difficult recovery from 1989 to the present day.
The exhibition, conceived by Contrasto, is carried out thanks to the joint effort between the
Municipality of
Rome and the CRAF (
Center of
Research and Archiviation of Photography) of Spilimbergo.
