Gianni Berengo Gardin (Santa Margherita Ligure, 1930) started his activity of photographer by working with La Gondola Photographic Circle in Venice in 1952 and with the Friulian Group for a New Photography of Spilimbergo in 1955. In 1954 he went to Paris where he met Doisneau, Willy Ronis and Masclet and in 1955 he became a photo-reporter and worked for Mario Pannunzio's magazine "Il Mondo" with whom he collaborated till 1965. Since that time he has been working with the most important national and international newspapers as Domus, Le Figaro, L'Espresso, Time, Stern etc... In 1957 he realized his famous photos about Venice for the book “Venise des Saisons” that marked his career and transformed him from a photo-amateur to a pro. In 1964 he started collaborating with the Italian Touring Club and travelled all over Italy and accumulated an important archive of images. He used to have his personal style: he is famous for his stringent black-and-white photos, for the attention he pay to the reality of the world and for his landscapes. In 1989 he attended “Spilimbergo Fotografia” with a great personal exhibition that was presented in 1991 at the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne. In 1994 some of his photos were displayed in the exhibition about Italian art at Guggenheim Museum of New York. He was awarded in Alres with the Oskar Barnack - Camera Group Award. Gianni Berengo Gardin published more than 150 photo-books. Since 1990 he is a member of the photo-agency Contrasto.
This exhibition, realized with the collaboration of La Gondola Photographic Circle in Venice and CRAF in Spilimbergo, is a worthy tribute to Berengo Gardin who started his great career between Venice and Spilimbergo.
